At the top of Yellow Mountain Ranch is Yellow Mountain Bald, a part of the Roan Highlands, one of the most unique areas in the North Carolina Mountains. Were you to fly over the area, you would notice a string of natural balds [grassy tops of mountains where trees naturally do not grow] beginning with Hump Mountain, then Little Hump Mountain, Yellow Mountain, Grassy Bald, Jane Bald, and Roan Mountain. This 12 mile ridgeline of grassy balds and health is the longest in the world. Yellow Mountain Ranch is very high elevation, ranging from 4700 to 5300 feet, with this home located at 5000 feet. Coming from almost any direction, you'll enjoy the naturally air conditioned summers. Yellow Mountain Bald rises to 5400 feet elevation. Take a look at the Recreational Areas Flyer at the bottom of this page for a full description of the many adjacent and nearby areas in the public domain, including the Appalachian Trail, about a 20 minute walk from the home.

It is located about 30 minutes to Beech Mountain, 30 minutes to Spruce Pine, 1-1/2 hours to Asheville, and 25 minutes to Linville.
What words could possibly express the impact of this view? It starts at the north with Beech Mountain, then sweeps past Howard's Knob in Boone, Hanging Rock in Valle Crucis, Sugar Mountain in Banner Elk, Grandfather Mountain and to the west, Jonas Ridge, spanning 30 miles of the High Country's landmark mountains. The scene changes constantly as clouds and sunshine, mist and fog roll through the area. it's definitely better than TV!
The house itself is as superb as the natural area surrounding it. Custom-built, it is a comfortable, easy-to-live-in home, designed for enjoyable entertaining or quiet relaxing. The stone-faced floor-to-ceiling wood-burning fireplace adds a cozy ambience to the living room, created light-and-bright by ample windows and a soaring ceiling.
This wood-burning fireplace and the gas-log fireplace in the sitting room augment radiant heat in the floors throughout the home. A new boiler and two new solar panels were installed a year ago. The solar heated hot water is supplemented by propane.
Upstairs is a loft, a second living area, adaptable to many uses, such as a sitting area. Plenty of light streams in through the window, which also has the mountain view. The current owners use it as an art studio and an area for playing games. The balcony, at the left of this picture, overlooks the living room. The 3rd bedroom opens off the loft area, in this photo where the door is open.
Loft sitting area. Opening off this area is a large storage area and a full bath.
Located off the loft, this ready nook is a comfortable spot to settle in for a good read. The carpet on this level is 2 years old, a natural fiber, wool, that is non-gassing.
The kitchen was remodeled two years ago with tumbled marble countertops, new appliances [Jenn Air gas range, warming oven, wall oven with convection and dehydrating capacities, microwave and Amana refrigerator with bottom freezer], rustic chandelier, and this island, custom designed and built. Deep drawers in the new cabinetry will make the cooks happy. A walk-in pantry is located to the right of the wall oven and microwave.
The home is designed with the open floor plan so desired today. A sitting area adjoins the kitchen, as does the dining area.
A gas-log fireplace warms the sitting area that adjoins the kitchen. The doors you see open to a coat closet, a guest bath, the laundry-room, and just to the right of this photo, to a mud room with entry to the carport. The flooring on this level of the home is antique heart-pine.
A different angle on the kitchen, sitting room and dining area. The kitchen balcony and the deck are located just outside the door at the right of the photo, Outdoor dining and entertaining are readily accessible.
Birdsongs fill the morning forest while you enjoy coffee -- and sunrises over Grandfather Mountain.
The master bath is spacious. Double sinks with tile countertops are available in this space. Not shown, to the left, is a large clothes closet. Additional storage is available through the door to the right. The bathing room is through the door to the left. Opening onto the room is a space now used for storage but originally designed, and convertible to, a sauna.
Just imagine relaxing in warm comfort in this jetted tub when snow is falling outside. A separate shower stall is to the right.
This large bedroom has perhaps the best view of all. The door you see leads to a large storage area. Not shown are a full bath, a spacious clothes closet, and a bonus room.
The bonus room opens off the second bedroom. Two skylights keep it light and bright. Many uses are possible -- create a den, a playroom, extra sleeping space, game room, work-out room, or whatever suits your interests.
The third bedroom opens from the Loft area. Behind the door is a large closet. The skylight keeps this room bright and cheerful.
